Tell me about yourself and your business:
My name is Kylie Matthews and I am mum to Skye (almost 3). I live in Auckland but only returned from my OE when I was 32 weeks pregnant. I came up with the idea for Kai Carrier when Skye was 7 months old after I gave her a couple of supermarket pouches (which she loved!) I was not keen on her eating these as they were expensive and I didn’t really know what was in them. I searched everywhere for a product like Kai Carrier but couldn’t find any so the seed was planted for me to create the product myself! I sat on the idea for a long time not really believing that I could start my own business -then thought if I don’t do it someone else will – so Kai Carrier was born.
What does it mean to you about winning this award?
I was so excited to be nominated for the award and even more so when I found out that I had won. It makes all the long hours, late nights and hard work feel worth it. I feel very proud that I have taken an idea and developed it into a product that other mums enjoy using and want to say a huge thank you for all the support I have received from friends and family during my first year of business.
Who has been the biggest influence in your business?
I have been very fortunate to have a great group of friends who have been willing to share their knowledge about various aspects of business with me – through their assistance I have managed to get Kai Carrier to where it is today. The biggest influence is probably my daughter – and wanting the business to be successful to enable me to be more flexible with my time so I can spend more of it with her!
Anything exciting going on right now or about to happen in your business?
I have a couple of new products on the way and can’t wait to launch these just before the Baby Show in August! Keep an eye out as I will be running some great opening specials. I have recently expanded the range to include some great accessories designed to make using your Kai Carrier cleaner, quicker and easier
What did you do before you started your business?
I am a Social Worker, and still work as one three days per week, so juggling work, home and a business is a bit of a struggle at times! I work for an amazing organisation called Youth Horizons Trust. I work predominantly with adolescents with behavioural problems in a residential setting. I also work with the young person’s family to ensure they are able to transition smoothly back into their care.
