Nicole and her Family

Nicole Joyce is the driving force behind Scallywags and Munchkins Market located in Waikato. Nicole returned to New Zealand Surrey, England at the end of 2013 with her husband and their 4 children, now aged 7, 6, 4 and 2. Nicole and her family had been living in the UK for 8 1/2 years, but wanted to return to their homeland to raise their family and give their children the ‘kiwi’ childhood they both had. Nicole has settled in the Waikato town of Te Awamutu, where she was born and raised and where her parents still live.

Scallywags and Munchkins Market was first held in Te Awamutu in November 2013. So far in 2014 two markets have been held in Te Awamutu with a third planned for November/December. After many requests, from stallholders and customers, the market was held in Hamilton in May this year. There will be a further three markets held in Hamilton in 2014.Dates are presently being arranged for markets to be held in Te Awamutu and Hamilton in 2015.

What did you do before you started your business?

I have been a full time mum since my eldest was born. Before that I worked as a primary school teacher in London and Auckland

What influenced you to start your business?

As my children have grown I felt it was time to start paid work. I had been involved in markets in the U.K. and had been thinking about starting one here.

What tactics helped you get your business started?

The main promotion of the market has been through my Facebook page. I also advertise in the papers local to the area. I have been very lucky to have 3 articles written about the market for newspapers.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

The positive feedback from stallholders and customers.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

Markets being held in Hamilton 8-10 times during the year and 2-3 times a year in Te Awamutu

In her spare time Nicole enjoys baking, gardening and spending time with family and friends!
