Your Guide to Making Baby Food

Following on from our article ‘Your Guide to Starting Baby Solids‘, this next article is your guide to making your own baby food.


As with most baby related products you are spoilt for choice…pouch baby food, jar baby food, home-made baby food – which is better for baby? All three of my children rejected jar baby food so I had no choice but to make their food.

A handy trick my mum taught me was to prepare a little extra when making dinner and set aside some vegetables (and later on meat) to turn into baby food.  


Making your own baby food can be daunting but with just a little forward planning, some reusable food pouches or cubes (even ice trays will do!), a stick blender and some fresh vegetables and fruits you are all set to go!

Did you know? Your baby has four to five times more taste buds than you do! This means bland food will have a distinct taste for them. You don’t need to add salt, sugar or other condiments to their food.

To prepare baby food:

  • Chop vegetable or fruit
  • Steam in a pot with a little water until soft.
  • Drain the water into a dish and put it to one side
  • Use a stick blender to make a smooth purée
  • Add the water (or baby milk) to get the right consistency
  • Let cool down before serving or transferring to your containers

You can store the purée in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze in reusable food pouches or cube trays.

As your baby gets older, you can start introducing different types of food and different textures.  Below is your guide of when you can introduce new foods.

 Baby Food Suitable for 6-7 months: Smooth, runny purées 

  • Cooked puréed fruit: apple, pear, apricot
  • Cooked puréed vegetables: carrot, pumpkin, kumara
  • Mashed banana or mashed avocado
  • Cooked puréed meat

Baby Food Suitable for 7-8 months: Thick purées with soft lumps and Mashed Food

  • Cooked mashed broccoli, cauliflower
  • Cooked egg (note some babies are allergic to egg)
  • Cooked pasta
  • Cheese, yoghurt, custard
  • Wholemeal bread

Food Suitable for 8-12 months: Chopped and Finger Food

  • Cut Kiwifruit, Orange, Pineapple
  • Berries
  • Cooked spinach, capsicum, mushroom

After 12 months your baby should be eating family meals, you can introduce honey after 12 months and cow’s milk. You may also find that your baby will be dropping their breast or formula feeds.
