We are really in the thick of winter now, and with winter comes coughs and colds. There is no way around it. Especially with little ones breeding germs like a factory!
I saw this AMAZING recipe for Sweet Lemon, Honey and Thyme Cough Syrup over on Boohoo Box‘s Facebook page. It is so good! Such a wonderful natural remedy for coughs in little ones. It’s great for big ones too, slipped hubby some the other night when he was coughing up a storm and it really helped to soothe him.
If you haven’t heard of Boohoo Box then you need to go and check out their website here. They make practical first aid kits to keep at home, in the car or when you go on holiday. Designed to teach children about first aid they also come fully equipped with a story book on fixing boo boos, monster spray and a freezable ouch pouch!
This recipe has only natural ingredients and each has a specific purpose for being included. Thyme helps with relaxing muscle spasms during coughing, lemon and honey soothe a sore throat. Raw honey, if used, contains antibacterial properties which can help combat an infection; and ginger calms upset tummies.
Here is the recipe:
Home Made Cough Syrup
A handful of fresh thyme sprigs
2 cups of water
1/2 cup of honey (use raw honey if you have it, but regular if you don’t have raw)
1/2 lemon chopped
Thumb sized piece of ginger, peeled and chopped (optional)
- Place the chopped lemon in the bottom of a mason jar or jug, cover it with the honey. The honey will draw out the liquids in the lemon.
- Put the thyme leaves and ginger into a pot and then cover them with the water. Bring the water to a gentle simmer and then reduce it until only about half remains.
- When reduced, strain the leaves, springs and ginger from the water mixture and add the water to the mason jar.
- Stir it all together and allow it to cool.
You can store your home made cough syrup in the fridge for a month or so and just use a spoonful as and when required.
